N1-20 & N12-18 – Work Package A
The project is located to the west and south of the Johannesburg CBD in the province of Gauteng and forms part of the Johannesburg Western Bypass.
The project comprises the section of National Route 1, Section 20 between the Golden Highway Interchange (P73-1) in the south and 14th Avenue interchange in the North.
Also included in this project is the section of National Route 12, Section 18 between Diepkloof interchange and Uncle Charlie’s interchange. Scope of works include the rehabilitation and widening of the freeway in both the northerly and southerly directions , as well as the various on and off ramps.
Work Package A comprises 17km of road on the N1 between the Golden Highway and 14th Avenue, and 1km on the N12 between the Diepkloof and M1 interchanges. In addition to the standard scope of works listed above (lane widening; creation of additional lanes; installation of median lighting; construction of concrete barriers; interchange upgrading; construction of directional ramps; and the installation of traffic management systems and an electronic toll system), Work Package A also entails the overlaying of all existing roads with new bitumen rubber asphalt (BRASO).
Specialised equipment
Work Package A has the distinction of using specialised electronic sensing equipment – one of only two such examples in the country – on the asphalt overlay. The sensor, which extends 6-7m in front of the paver, is able to sense in advance where the paver needs to adjust the paving depth to ensure a level surface for optimal rideability.
SNA/ITS Joint Venture are the consultants on this project.
